Giovanni “Gio” Ponti, (Milan, November 18, 1891 - Milan, September 16, 1979), is one of the Italian masters of architecture. He was also a designer and essayist and one of the most important of the twentieth century.
Other than the great architectural works which carry his unmistakable signature, he created a vast amount of work in the furniture sector. This is demonstrated in his three Milanese houses which were fully furnished in the "Ponti" style. The houses in via Randaccio, 1925, Casa Laporte in via Brin, 1926 and the last in via Dezza, in 1957 is an "expression" of his home design ideas. Gio Ponti was an Italian promoter of industrial design and introduced the idea of interior furnishing ranges produced as being a "sophisticated," economic, "democratic" and modern.
Molteni&C managed a reissuing project of furniture and furnishings designed by Gio Ponti for products for these private homes and limited editions. After a long journey of research, selection and study of prototypes, the collection was exhibited at the Salone del Mobile 2012. This was thanks to the cooperation and the exclusively signed agreement of the Ponti heirs and the artistic director of Cerri & Associati Studio.

D.157.6 Due Foglie | Sofa

The Due Foglie Sofa from our Heritage catalog emerges as a highlight of 2024, paying homage to historic design figure Gio Ponti. This piece takes inspiration from Ponti’s stunning design for Villa Planchart in Caracas, commissioned in 1954 by Anala and Armando Planchart, ardent admirers of Ponti’s diverse talents. The sofa, one of the villa's iconic features, now takes center stage in the 2024 Collection under the name D.157.6, it’s current title in the Gio Ponti Archive. Our project began with an examination of materials and technical specifications to not only ensure faithful adherence to the original design but also to the enduring quality that characterizes all Molteni&C products.

The distinctive silhouette of the D.157.6 loveseat, originally named Due Foglie due to its seamless curvilinear shape reminiscent of a pod and two elongated leaves, is supported by a delicate trestle structure with a metallic finish. The defining feature of the loveseat is undeniably the foam structure, specially shaped by two molds. Beyond its striking aesthetic, this feature offers a unique seating experience: spacious and comfortable for one, yet conducive to the intimate conversations or quiet moments of two.

Allowing for the rare personalization of such a legendary piece, designer Marta Ferri has curated a wide selection of fabrics and leathers chosen specifically for both their visual appeal and performance abilities. Reviving the charm of a bygone era, the D.157.6 sofa exudes timeless elegance and transcends passing trends. The Gio Ponti archive, a wellspring of inspiration, continues to inform Molteni&C's style, blending historical values with a forward-looking perspective. As we celebrate our prestigious 90-year milestone, the D.157.6 sofa epitomizes a lifestyle that spans generations and continents.
