New Collection

A tribute to two of the greatest masters of Italian architecture: Ignazio Gardella and Carlo Scarpa.

Born in Milan in 1905 and in Venice in 1906, just one year apart, they tackled common themes in designing both public and private architecture, exhibitions and museums, always with a special attention to detail, with the ability to control design, from the scale of architecture to the most sophisticated details and furnishings.

The 2021 New Collection, designed by our creative director Vincent Van Duysen, is intended as a tribute to two great protagonists of one of the most creative seasons of Italian architecture and design.

Two figures who were simultaneously, but with their own independent languages, interpreters of the Modern Movement that started with the revolution of Rationalism: Ignazio Gardella and Carlo Scarpa.

About

Carlo Scarpa (2 June 1906 – 28 November 1978) was an Italian architect, influenced by the materials, landscape and the history of Venetian culture, and by Japan. Scarpa translated his interests in history, regionalism, invention, and the techniques of the artist and craftsman into ingenious glass and furniture design.

Ignazio Gardella taught us the gentleness of shapes, the attention to materials that make spaces clear with their rigorous proportions. Vibrant and warm materials, a palette of colours and materials that follow each other delicately, creating an elegant and simple environment.

And then, his brilliant moments of strong personality, with bright colours - orange lacquer, burgundy - and the idea of connecting modernity to ancient art masterpieces hanging from a rack and becoming the protagonists of the space, with the elegance of knowing how to stand out without being ostentatious.

Carlo Scarpa

Cylindrical pillars, from structural elements, are transformed into sculptural elements that mark and distinguish spaces.

Scarpa’s home is defined by materials that create contrasts and represent memories of the Venetian palazzo.

Wood, marble aggregates and metals recall the luminosity of the surface of the water and the stucco walls.

About

Ignazio Gardella (30 March 1905 in Milan, Lombardy – 16 March 1999) was an Italian architect and designer. Graduated in engineering from the Politecnico di Milano university in 1928. Among the protagonists of Italian Modern Movement, in his long professional activity, which began before his graduation at the end of the 1920s with his father Arnaldo Gardella, produced an enormous quantity of projects and realizations.

Carlo Scarpa, Carlo Scarpa, Tobia’s father, inspired us with his architecture, where clarity is emphasised by elements that bring geometry. A line or a graphic sign link and identify geometric backgrounds that recall the panelling of traditional Japanese houses, a great passion of the Master who spent the last season of his life in Japan.

This year the Gio Ponti collection is enriched with forward-looking, iconic designs by the great Master Gio Ponti carefully selected

to bring timeless design to contemporary settings.

An armchair with very modern shapes, that back in the 1950 when it was created,

were considered almost out of this world and never been thought of before.

careful study of drawings, photos and period materials has made it possible to faithfully reproduce the D.847.1 desk in all its details,

bringing to light a masterpiece, inspired by the high level of craftsmanship in solid wood processing.

More than 70 years after the original ideas, Round D.154.5 chair and D.847.1 desk are reborn thanks to the Heritage Collection reissue project by Molteni&C, in collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archives.

The early 1950s marked a turning point in Gio Ponti’s furniture designs, towards highly innovative solutions linked

to functional and essential shapes: the end of the Second World War,

with the desire to restart and rebuild a modern world full of novelties, thus moving away from the past; the availability of innovative materials, which made it possible to conceive objects that were previously unfeasible.
